Baseball Swept By Purdue

West Lafayette, Ind. - The Michigan State baseball team (4-15, 0-3 Big Ten) dropped two games to Purdue, 4-3 and 5-2, on Saturday, March 25.
In game one, MSU jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first. Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.) led off the game with a triple, and scored on Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.) groundout on the next play. In the fourth, Pisani had his second RBI of the game, ripping a double to centerfield to knock in Troy Bergman (St. Clair Shores, Mich.).
Purdue (13-6, 3-0 Big Ten) countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Daniel Underwood had an RBI double in the inning, followed by an RBI single from Brad Kiner.
The Spartans tied the game in the fifth on a home run to right-centerfield by Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio). Geswein now has seven home runs on the year.
With the game tied in the sixth, the Boilers scored the game-winning run after consecutive hits by Underwood and Nick McIntyre.
Scott Brandell (DeWitt, Mich.) pitched six innings in the loss, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. Brandell's record falls to 0-4.
The Boilermakers completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.
Purdue stormed out to a 4-0 lead before the Spartans scored their first run in the fourth. Malek hit his first career triple to leftfield, and later scored on an RBI groundout by Geswein. MSU's second run came in the sixth in similar fashion. Geswein (2-for-3, RBI) tripled to centerfield, scoring on a Rick Court (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) RBI groundout the next play.
MSU starter Gary Zsigo (Lennon, Mich.) took the loss for the Spartans. Zsigo (0-2) pitched three innings, giving up five runs on five hits.
MSU returns to action tomorrow, March 26, in the finale of a four-game series against Purdue. The game is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
