EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State baseball team came from behind and scored two runs in the seventh and final inning of game one in the doubleheader against Northwestern to pull out a 5-4 victory. Following the first game the Spartans and the Wildcats squared off again in another seven inning contest, but this time Northwestern came out on top with a 3-2 win.
In the first game Northwestern initiated the scoring by putting up two runs in its half of the first inning. The score would remain 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats until the fourth inning when the Spartans countered with a run of its own off sophomore outfielder Chris McCuiston's (Birmingham, Mich.) RBI single, which scored freshman outfielder Bob Malek (Canton, Mich.). The score would remain 2-1 until the sixth inning when the Spartans would tack on two more runs to take a 3-2 lead.
Igniting MSU in the sixth was sophomore first baseman Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio), who hit a two-out double to right field. Following Geswein was junior designated hitter Rick Court (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), whose single into centerfield scored Geswein and tied the game at two a piece. The Spartans claimed the lead when sophomore third baseman Troy Bergman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) brought home Court with a RBI single into left field. The Wildcats, however, came back with two runs of their own in the sixth to reclaim a 4-3 lead.
In the seventh, though, the Spartans went ahead for good. Seniors Ted Demetral (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and Mike Pisani (Rochester, Mich.) each reached base on errors, which set up a game tying RBI single by Malek. Malek's effort was then followed by Court, who drove home the winning run after he hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Pisani.
In the second game pitching was at a premium, as Spartan starter Gary Zsigo (Lennon, Mich.) and Wildcat starter Dan Padget each went the distance. In the end, though, Padget received one more run then did Zsigo and walked away with a 3-2 win.
Northwestern scored all three runs in the second inning, while MSU scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
