Women Golfers Travel to Big Ten Championship

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team is competing in this weekend's 2000 Big Ten Championship in Madison, Wis. The tournament, which is being hosted by the University of Wisconsin, will take place Friday, April 28-Sunday, April 30, at the par-72, 5,962-yard University Ridge Golf Course. Teams will play 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday.
The Spartans have won two tournaments this season, including the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational and the Waterlefe/USF Invitational. Last week the Spartans took second at the Lady Buckeye Invitational, finishing only behind host school Ohio State.
This season, the Spartans have been led by junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio). Gant took medallist honors at last weeks Lady Buckeye Invitational and has a season average of 76.53. Bastel, perhaps the team's most consistent golfer, has a season average of 76.39.
Spartans Stacy Snider (So., Grand Rapids, Mich.), Jessica Till (Fr., Fort Wayne, Ind.), Shellie Morton (Fr., Detroit, Mich.) and Erin Roe (Fr., Martinsville, Ind.) will also compete in the Big Ten Championship.
Michigan State's last Big Ten Tournament victory came in 1982. Since then, their best finish was second in 1987. Last year, the Spartans took third, while Emily Bastel was MSU's top golfer at the tournament, finishing sixth. Ohio State won last years championship.
