MSU Golfers Qualify For NCAA Championship

Columbus, Ohio - The Michigan State women's golf team finish sixth at the 2000 NCAA East Regional to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field for the first time since 1984. The Spartans shot 305 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 906. Defending NCAA Champion Duke won the tourney with a three-day total of 897. Big Ten rivals Purdue and Northwestern tied for second with a total of 900, followed by Tennessee (902), Louisiana State (903), MSU, Wake Forest (907), Auburn (907), Ohio State (914), Georgia (914) and Florida (915).
"Qualifying for the championship was our goal from the start and we are very excited that we made it," third-year Spartan coach Stacy Slobodnik said. "We have had an outstanding year. This team stayed together and played through a lot of adversity.
"Making the championship is a statement, but we want to do more than just qualify for the tournament," she added. "We didn't feel like we played our best golf this weekend, so we are looking forward to practicing hard next week and then going out to Oregon and playing even better."
Junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) shot a 78 on the final day to finish in a tie for 13th-place with a three-day total of 223. Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sanduskey, Ohio) shot a two-over par 73 to finish in a tie for 28th with a 54-hole total of 228. Ohio State's Lisa Strom and Purdue's Kari Damron shared medalist honors with a 216 total.
Sophomore Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids) finished in a tie for 40th after shooting a 73 on Saturday, giving her a total of 230. Rookie Jessica Till (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tied for 52nd (76-75-81=232), while freshman Erin Roe (Martinsville, Ind.) tied for 89th with a total of 239 (81-74-84).
A total of 24 teams and six individuals will compete at the NCAA Championship, May 24-27, in Sun River, Ore. The Spartans finished 16th at the 1984 NCAA Championship and 18th at the first-ever NCAA event in 1982.
