Sunriver, Ore. - The Michigan State women's golf team tied for 20th place at the 2000 NCAA Championship which concluded on Saturday, May 27 at the Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore. The Spartans, who were competing in their first NCAA Championship since 1984, shot a 313 on the final day for a 72-hole total of 1240. Arizona ran away with the team title with a 21-stroke cushion over runner-up Stanford. The Wildcats also took home medalist honors with Jenna Daniels posting a three stroke (287) advantage over teammate and runner-up Julia Kraschinski (290).
Sophomore Emily Bastel (Upper Sanduskey, Ohio) finished in a tie for 21st in the individual standings with a four-day total of 300. Bastel, who posted an even-par 72 on the first day of competition, closed out the championship with a 77 in stormy conditions on the final day. Junior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tied for 29th with a 302 after firing a 75 on Saturday.
"Competing in our first NCAA Championship in 16 years was a great experience for us," Spartan coach Stacy Slobodnik said. "The bottom line is we didn't play the kind of golf that we had been playing all year. We just didn't get the scores from all of our players and that really hurt us. We know that if we would have shot even our average we would have been in really good shape. However, tying for 20th in the country is a great accomplishment for us.
"We now know what we have to work on and the hurdles that we have to overcome," Slobodnik added. "We didn't feel that we were outplayed by any team. We felt very comfortable being there and we see ourselves as one of the elite 24 teams in the country. We're looking forward to next year because we return all of our players. We are moving forward with the knowledge that we had an absolutely outstanding year. We're taking the program to the next level and that was one of our goals, it just has to go step-by-step."
Sophomore Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids) closed out the championship with a 79 to finish in a tie for 91st with a total of 315. Rookies Jessica Till (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Erin Roe (Martinsville, Ind.) tied for 115th with identical scores of 327. Till closed out the championship with an 82 on the final day, while Roe posted an 85.
