Rolex,College Golf Foundation Honor Spartan Alumni Joan Garety

EAST LANSING - The College Golf Foundation and Rolex Watch U.S.A. presented former MSU student-athlete Joan Garety and William B. Greene, Jr. with the fifth annual Rolex Achievement Awards. The award honors former varsity collegiate golfers who have achieved excellence in their chosen careers and made a special contribution to society.
Garety was a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain of the MSU women's golf team from 1975-1979. She won individual honors in nine tournaments and helped led the Spartans to four Big Ten Championships. As a senior, Garety received the Dr. James S. Feurig Award as the athlete who best demonstrated dedication, perseverance, positive attitude, modesty, humility and maturity.
Graduating summa cum lade with a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Garety went on to work for Meijer, Inc. where she is currently serves as Vice President Finance and Tresurer.
Garety had continued success on the golf course, as she became the Michigan State Women's Amateur Champion in 1982 and again in 1997. She was also selected as the Golf Association of Michigan Amateur Woman Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999. Garety has been the recipient of the Michigan Women's Golf Leadership Award and the Nell Jackson Outstanding Alumni Award, and has been a member of the Michigan State University Athletic Council since 1995.
As winner of the Rolex Achievement Award, Garety will receive an engraved Rolex timepiece and a framed certificate. Both Michigan State's golf programs will each receive a $2,500 donation from Rolex and the College Golf Foundation on behalf of Garety.
