Metamora, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore golfer Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids) won the Michigan Women's Amateur Championship with a 5-4 win over Mary Jane Anderson in the final at the Metamora Golf and Country Club on July 14.
To get to the finals, Snider had to defeat her college coach, Stacy Slobodnik in the quarterfinals, 3-2. The win also helped to continue the Spartan presence at the state amateur. Overall, a player with MSU ties has won the championship in four of the last five years. Slobodnik won titles in 1996 and 1998, while former Spartan standout Joan Garety was the winner in 1997.
Snider, whose best finish prior to this year was a quarterfinal showing in 1996, used Slobodnik's fianc? Jim Stoll as a caddy all week
"Stacy played great golf throughout the tournament," Slobodnik said. "She played with a lot of confidence. Prior to the tournament, she spent a lot of time at our golf camp working on her putting and developing a bond with Jim and that really paid off for her.
"Our match was very competitive, we both played well. I'm very proud of Stacy and I'm hoping that this will be a breakthrough event for her."
Snider was the Spartans' No. 3 golfer in 1999-2000, averaging 77.71 throughout the season. She played a key role in helping MSU to a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championship and a tie for 20th in its first NCAA Championship appearance since 1984.
