EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State women's cross country team took first in this year's Spartan Invitational scoring 39 points. The top five in team competition was rounded out by Loyola-Chicago (40 points), Edinboro (64 points), Hillsdale (82 points) and Roberts Wesleyan (140 points).
MSU's Ann Somerville, who won the invitational in a time of 17:50.50, was paced the entire 5k by freshman teammate Michelle Carson who placed second in 17:56.70. Loyola-Chicago's Alana Crisman and Kristyne McGuinn finished third and fourth, with the times of 18:08.40 and 18:14.40 respectively.
"I am very happy that we were able to pull out the win over Loyola," said Head Coach Jim Stintzi. "We are struggling right now with depth and finding girls to move up into the fourth and fifth running spots.
With Cindy (Durocher) out with a strained hip flexor, with need to fill the gap between those top girls, like Ann (Somerville) and Michelle (Carson) and the rest of the pack."
The Spartans head next to the Great American Cross Country Festival on September 23 in Charlotte, N.C.
