Purdue Overcomes Men's Swimming and Diving

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team suffered their third dual meet loss of the season to Purdue today in East Lansing. The Boilermakers walked away with 172 points over the Spartans' 128.
One of the team's major strengths was revealed through the performance of the Spartan divers. In the one- meter dives, Phil Hillary (Freemont, Mich.) took first with 271.88 points, while Nick Visscher (Holland, Mich.) took second with a score of 264.00 and Mike McKee (Sterling Heights, Mich.) placed third (261.00). The divers were successful in the three- meter dives as well, as McKee took first with 285.55 and Visscher placed second with 259.725 points.
Another strong point in the Spartan performances were the freestyle events. First place finishes included Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) the 1000 free (9:32.14), Scott Shafer (Centerville, Va.) in the 200 free (1:40.75), and the 400 free relay team of Shafer, John Munley (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Rick Nichols (Mercersberg, Pa.), and Nick DeFauw (West Bloomfield, Mich.) with a time of 3:05.71. Mike Tingley (Louisville, Ky.) also took first for the Spartans in the 200 backstroke (1:51.98).
The Spartans swim with the women's team against Oakland on Saturday at 1p.m. in East Lansing.
