Women's Tennis Takes Toledo in Season Opener, 6-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The MSU women's tennis team started the season off impressively on January 20, with a 6-1 win over the University of Toledo at the MSU Tennis Facility.
The Spartans were strong early, sweeping the doubles competition to earn the first team point. Senior Natasha Skogerboe (Coon Rapids, MN) paired with sophomore Mollie Hood (Bellaire, MI) at No. 1 doubles and freshmen Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) and Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) at No. 2 doubles each won decisively with scores of 8-4. After falling behind 3-6, the No. 3 doubles team of junior Christee Chargot (Port Huron, MI) and freshman Josie Schmude (Traverse City, MI) came back to take their match 8-6, completing the Spartan doubles sweep.
In the singles competition, No.1 Skogerboe led MSU with a 6-2, 6-1 win over UT's Monica Ribero. Also earning their first wins of the 2001 were Lay at No. 2 singles, Juluissen at No. 4, Hood at No. 5 , and Chargot at No. 6.
"I was pleased with the attitude and professionalism that our girls displayed," said MSU head coach Tim Bauer. "I think the program is headed in the right direction and today served as a glimpse of the future of the program. I was also pleased with everyone's play today."
The Spartans will take on Western Michigan January 27 in Kalamazoo at 2:00 p.m. before returning home for a month of home competition.
