GREEN BAY, Wis. - It was a total team effort as Michigan State posted its fourth-straight victory, a 68-53 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Phoenix Sports Center. The win was the fourth-straight victory for the Spartans as MSU improved to 8-1 on the year. Meanwhile, UWGB dropped to 5-4 overall.
"I thought everyone played together and played hard today," said MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie. "Every week we continue to grow a little more. We beat a very good team today."
The Spartans jumped out of the gates with an early 10-0 lead, with freshman center Kelli Roehrig and junior forward Syreeta Bromfield each adding four early points off transition baskets. MSU extended the lead to 16-7 on a fastbreak bucket by freshman guard Kristin Haynie. But, UWGB would close the gap to two (16-14) on five straight points.
Sophomore guard Candice Jackson hit two straight three-point baskets as MSU extended its lead to six (22-16). UWGB took its first lead of the game (25-24) on a pair of free throws by Chandra Johnson. However, five straight points by Syreeta Bromfield gave MSU a 31-27 lead heading into the half.
The second half saw back and fourth action by both teams early on. A three-point basket by Candice Jackson gave MSU a 36-32 lead with 16:38 left. UWGB bounced right back with a layup by Natalie Yudt to pull to within two (36-34).
