Spartan Wrestling Finishes Sixth At Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Michigan State wrestling team finished sixth out of 61 teams with 73 points at the Midlands Championships Sunday, Dec. 30. Iowa took first place in the two-day event with 151 points. Four MSU wrestlers placed in the tournament. Ryan L'Amoreaux (So., Clarkston) and Karl Nadolsky (Jr., Holland) took third place in the 133-pound and 149-pound divisions, respectively. Gray Maynard (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) placed fourth in the 157-pound division, while Chris Williams (Sr., Perry) took eighth at 125 pounds.
At 133 pounds, L'Amoreaux defeated No. 3 seed Jeff Ratliff of Ohio State in the third-place match, 6-2. L'Amoreaux won four matches on the day, including a 3-2 decision over No. 2 seed David Douglas of Arizona State.
In the 149-pound bracket, Nadolsky topped Scott Frohardt of Air Force, 7-4, to earn third place honors. Nadolsky also won four matches on the day and beat No. 3 seed Billy Maldanado of Lassen College in the consolation round.
Maynard lost to No. 2 seed Luke Becker of Minnesota, 4-2, in the semifinal match of the winner's bracket at 157 pounds to start the day. Maynard then defeated Shad Benton, 9-7, before falling to No. 5 seed Matt Anderson of Lassen College in the third-place match.
At 125 pounds, Williams won his first match of the day, a 1-0 decision over No. 8 seed Twan Pham of Illinois. Williams then lost to Ty Malia, 6-4, to earn eighth-place honors.
MSU assistant coach Alexis Vila wrestled unattached at 125 pounds, and won the title after defeating No. 1 seed Leroy Vega of Minnesota, 6-5, in the championship match.
Michigan State returns to action Saturday, Jan. 5, to face Clarion in a dual meet at Jenison Field House. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.
