Illinois State Tops MSU Softball, 7-4

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Michigan State softball team fell to Illinois State, 7-4, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) in the Arizona State/Louisville Slugger Classic. MSU falls to 0-3 on the season, while ISU improves to 5-3.
Michigan State got things going early, scoring two runs in the first. Tiffany Wallace (So., Wildomar, Calif.) hit a RBI double to knock in Amanda Melton (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) and Robyn Golden (So., Romulus, Mich.) hit a RBI single to score Brittney Green (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.), giving the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.
The Redbirds answered with two runs of their own in the first to knot the game at two, and scored a run in the second take the lead.
MSU reclaimed the lead in the third on a two-run homer by Golden, who smashed a shot over the left-center field fence. Golden finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI. The homer was Golden's first of her career.
ISU tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, and reclaimed the lead for good in the fourth on a two-run homer by April Schermann. Illinois State added an insurance run in the fifth to complete the game's scoring.
Keri DeJong (Jr., Portage, Mich.) started on the mound for the Spartans and threw two innings, but Becky Gray (Jr., Burr Oak, Mich.) took the loss. Gray (0-2) gave up three runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Michigan State returns to action later today (Feb. 17) to face sixth-ranked Arizona State (7-1). ASU defeated the Spartans last night, 11-0.
