EAST LANSING, Mich. - Peter Heyer, a 6-foot-4, 295-pound offensive tackle from Cologne, Germany, signed a National Letter of Intent Monday to attend Michigan State and play football in 2001. With the addition of Heyer, Michigan State's 2001 recruiting class includes 23 newcomers.
The 21-year-old Heyer recorded 73 pancakes last season while earning Most Valuable Player honors in the German Football League. A two-year starter for Coach Kirk Heidelberg, he helped the Cologne Crocodiles to the Division I national championship last year.
In addition, Heyer was a two-year starter on the European National All-Star Team and played in two Global Junior Championship Games (vs. Mexico) - 1998 in San Diego and '99 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was selected Offensive Lineman of the Year for the European National Team in '99.
"Peter Heyer really impressed the coaching staff with his play on film," Michigan State head football coach Bobby Williams said. "He had an outstanding career playing at a high-club level in Germany and had great success on the European National Team. Peter has a lot of natural skills.
"With his experience, it's almost as if we signed a junior college player with high school (freshman) eligibility."
Heyer graduated from Martin Luther King High School in Cologne before attending the College of Cologne.
