Softball Falls To No. 23 Southern Mississippi, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The 23rd-ranked Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles shutout the Michigan State softball team, 3-0, Friday afternoon (Feb. 23) in MSU's second game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Spartans fall to 0-7, 0-2 in the tournament, while the Eagles improve to 7-4.
Southern Miss broke a scoreless tie in the third on a two-out Spartan error, making the game 1-0. The Eagles brought in two more runs in the fifth on a double down the left field line by Sarah Boyd.
Three runs was all Golden Eagle starter Melissa Cundiff (4-2) needed as she halted the Spartan offensive attack with a complete game shutout.
MSU collected seven hits in the game, but stranded six runners.
Brittney Green (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.) had two hits in the contest, including her first collegiate double in the seventh inning.
Spartan starter Niki Stemberger (Jr., San Jose, Calif.) went five innings and gave up three runs on six hits in the loss. Stemberger is now 0-2 for the season.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow (Feb. 24) at 10:00 a.m. to face the 10th-ranked Washington Huskies in MSU's third game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
