EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf squad opened the spring season Feb. 12-14 at the TRW Regional Challenge in Los Angeles. MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik recently sat down and answered some questions about her team's upcoming spring season.
1. How did it feel to be back out in the warm climate and on the course after being off for almost three months?
S: Actually, it was quite chilly out in Los Angeles with a lot of rain! But what we enjoyed was being back in the heat of competition.
2. How did you feel your team performed following the break?
S: We were disappointed in our place finish out in Los Angeles, obviously, it was not what we were expecting or hoping for. We were missing a solid fourth score for team total along with our veterans not posting consistent scores under 75. However, it was a learning experience for the team. We know what it takes to be a top-10 program, and we want to be in that position and work diligently each day to get there. We learn from our mistakes and move onto our next competition that will get us into that position.
3. What expectations do you have for the team this spring?
S: Our goals for the season are to win the Big Ten Championship and qualify for the NCAA Finals while having an opportunity to prove that Michigan State University is ready to establish itself as a golf program, a golf powerhouse year in and year out.
4. What is going to be the keys for a successful spring season?
S: It takes four scores for the team total, so our key is to establish our fourth and fifth players. We need two players to step up and contribute consistent scores to the team total and that will help our three veterans.
5. Who are the golfers to watch this spring?
S: We have three of the most decorated players currently on the team in Spartan history in Kasey Gant, Emily Bastel and Stacy Snider. Each of these women has accomplished awesome things in their tenure here and there is only more to come!
6. How do you plan to prepare for the next tournament?
S: That is an on-going process - communicating with each player, figuring out how they can become better out on the course both with their physical swing and mental game. We will be in Orlando playing and practicing for seven days before our next competition, which will give us plenty of time to prepare for the Peggy Kirk Bell as we attempt to win for a second year in a row!
