Softball Splits In Day One Of San Diego Tournament

SAN DIEGO - The Michigan State softball team split its two games in day one action of the University of San Diego Tournament on Friday (March 16). The Spartans fell to San Diego State 10-4 in game one and defeated San Diego 3-1 in game two. MSU is now 5-17 for the season.
In the first game, SDSU (13-10) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after three innings of play. Becky Gray (Jr., Burr Oak, Mich.) started on the mound for MSU, surrendering five runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
The Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Demita Clark (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) RBI single to center field that brought in pinch-runner Margaret Schick (So., Grass Lake, Mich.).
Keri DeJong (Jr., Portage, Mich.) relieved Gray (3-7) in the fourth, allowing one run on one hit in two innings of work.
The Aztecs tallied four more runs in the sixth and seventh off reliever Niki Stemberger (Jr., Sacremento, Calif.), increasing the lead to 10-1.
Michigan State rallied for three runs in the seventh. Shealee Dunavan (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) had a RBI single, while Clark added her second RBI single of the game.
The Spartans came back from the game one setback to defeat San Diego 3-1 in game two.
Jessica Beech (Fr., Okemos, Mich.) threw her third complete game of the season, tossing a one-hitter on four strikeouts. Beech improves her record to 2-4 for the season.
MSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The Spartans had four hits in the inning, including an RBI triple by Tiffany Wallace (So., Wildomar, Calif.) and a RBI single by Dunavan.
The Toreros scored one unearned run on three MSU errors in the bottom half of the third.
Michigan State tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to make it 3-1 as Schick scored on a two-out USD fielding error.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow (March 17) to face San Diego at 3:30 p.m. EST and San Diego State at 6:00 p.m. EST.
