EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's gymnastics team has qualified for the 2001 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, hosted by The Ohio State University April 5-7. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Spartans have qualified for the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships.
Ohio State (Big Ten), Oklahoma (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) and Massachusetts (Eastern College Athletic Conference) each earned automatic bids to the championships based on first-place finishes at their respective conference championships. The other competitors include the top nine teams based on their national qualifications average, the top 12 all-around competitors who are not members of a selected team and the top 12 individuals per event who are not members of a selected team or have not already been selected in the all-around. Teams and individuals are selected based on a national qualifications average formula.
Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals in each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, will advance from each qualifying session to the championships. The team championships, all-around finals and individual preliminaries will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 6.
The top eight individuals in each event at the team championships will advance to the individual finals, with ties resulting in more than eight gymnasts advancing allowed. The NCAA individual event finals will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 7.
