TAMPA, Fla. - The Michigan State softball team split a doubleheader with Boston University Tuesday afternoon (March 6) at the Greco Softball Complex in Tampa, Fla. MSU (2-12) took game one, 3-0, while BU (4-4) won game two by the same score.
Becky Gray (Jr., Burr Oak, Mich.) tossed a three-hit shutout in game one, her second of the season and eighth of her career, which now moves her into seventh place all-time at MSU. Gray (2-4) dominated the Terriers, striking out five and not allowing a single runner past second base the entire game.
Gray got an early lead to work with as the Spartans scored two in bottom of the first. Amanda Melton (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) and Brittney Green (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.) each crossed the plate for MSU, while Robyn Golden (So., Romulus, Mich.) knocked in her team-leading fifth run of the season.
In the fourth, Michigan State added to its lead as Jessica Beech (Fr., Okemos, Mich.) led off the inning with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice from Lacy Hauxhurst (So., Westminster, Calif.). Beech scored on a RBI single by Angel Merren (Fr., Wayland, Mich.), who went 3-for-3 in the game.
The outcome was reversed in game two, as the Terriers topped the Spartans, 3-0. Robyn Horrick pitched the complete game shutout for BU, allowing only four hits and striking out six.
BU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans tried to rally in the fifth by loading the bases, but Horrick silenced the comeback with a strikeout to end the inning.
The Terriers added an unearned run in the sixth, scoring on two Spartan errors, to increase the lead to 3-0.
Beech (0-3) went 5 1/3 innings on the mound for MSU, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out six.
Michigan State returns to action Thursday (March 8) at the Speedline Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida. MSU takes on Temple at 11 a.m. and Georgia Southern at 3 p.m. in day one of the tournament.
