Softball Falls To Texas Tech, 2-1

TAMPA, Fla. - Texas Tech defeated the Michigan State softball team, 2-1, Friday night (March 9) in day two action of the Speedline Invitational. MSU falls to 4-14, 2-2 in the tournament, while the Red Raiders improve to 12-8, 4-0.
Michigan State took an early one-run lead in the top of the first. Jessica Beech (Fr., Okemos, Mich.) led off with a single to center field, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Angel Merren (Fr., Wayland, Mich.), and crossed the plate for her team-leading fifth run on a RBI double from Tiffany Wallace (So., Wildomar, Calif.).
Texas Tech answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning with two outs. Eva Hernshaw slapped a single to right field, then took second on a wild pitch. Hernshaw scored on a Shauna Briggs shot up the middle to center field to tie the game at one.
The Red Raiders broke the tie in the fourth, scoring an unearned run on a two-out Spartan error. Carmen Grindell, who hit a one-out double, scored the game-winning run for Texas Tech.
Red Raider starter Maggie Ayers held the lead for the victory, pitching a four-hit complete game for her first win of the season (1-2).
Beech (1-4), who also threw a four-hit complete game, took the loss for MSU.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow for day three of the Speedline Invitational, going up against the Utah Utes at 2:00 p.m.
