Michigan State Women's Crew Races Against Notre Dame

EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The Michigan State women's crew hosted Notre Dame on Saturday, March 31 in its first home event of the spring season. MSU won two of five events, capturing victories in the 2nd varsity eight and varsity four.
Because the Spartans' spring course on Lake Ovid was still frozen over, MSU raced at its fall course on the Grand River. Due to the venue change, crews competed in three heats in a best of three format.
MSU's 2nd varsity eight was victorious over Notre Dame after finishing with a time of 4:04.7 in the first heat and 4:06.4 in the second, while the Notre Dame A boat posted times of 4:10.9 and 4:08.9.
In varsity four competition, Michigan State's A boat finished the first heat in 4:21.6 and the second in 4:43.7, while Notre Dame finished with times of 4:29.3 and 4:57.1.
Notre Dame took the varsity eight and both novice eight races with victories in each heat.
"Of course when you race you always want to win, but we had other specific goals in mind today, some of which we met," MSU head coach Bebe Bryans said. "While the varsity eight executed some of the changes we have been working on, they are still trying to find their speed. Notre Dame was a lot stronger than they have been in the past, so while you always want to win, it wasn't a bad loss for us."
"The second varsity eight executed what we were working on better, found better power, and were more successful because of it," Bryans said. "The varsity four - especially the first four - we just started putting those lineups together and were pleased with their performances as well."
