Michigan State Women's Crew Races at Buckeye Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State women's crew raced against Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, USC, Clemson and Kansas at the Buckeye Invitational on Saturday, April 14, in Columbus, Ohio. The regatta was held at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River and was divided into two sessions.
In varsity 8 competition, five of the six boats Michigan State raced against were ranked higher than the Spartans. USC came in with the highest ranking (No. 2) and was followed by Michigan (No. 5), Ohio State (No. 9), Iowa (No. 11), Clemson (No. 15) and Michigan State (No. 19). Kansas was unranked.
In the first session, race No. 1, Michigan State's top finish came from the varsity 4, which placed second out of four boats with a time of 7:41.70. The Spartans were edged out by Ohio State, which won the session one, race No. 1, varsity 4 with a time of 7:40.62. Michigan State's varsity 8 finished second out of fourth boats in the varsity eight session one, race No. 1, with a time of 6:50.98.
"This was our first chance to really row 2000 meters without some sort of controversy or problem," said MSU head coach Bebe Bryans. "We continued to learn throughout the day and it was a great confidence booster."
In session two, the MSU varsity 8 was third of four in race No. 2, but bettered its time to 6:49.55. The Spartans' varsity 4 took second out of three in race No. 2, bettering its time to 7:32.99.
In novice competition, Michigan State's first novice 8 finished second of four in session one, race No. 2 (7:07.98), and second of three in session two, race No. 2 (7:06.04).
The Spartans will return to competition at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. on April 28.
