Ohio State Sweeps Spartan Softball

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State swept Michigan State in a doubleheader, 4-2 in game one and 6-1 in game two, at Buckeye Field on Friday afternoon (April 20). MSU falls to 17-32 (4-8 Big Ten) for the season, while OSU improves to 35-12 (9-3).
In game one, Ohio State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Michigan State came back with two runs of its own in the third to tie the game. Amanda Melton (Jr., Saugus, Calif.) led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a Buckeye error and scored on a RBI single by Brittney Green (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.). Shealee Dunavan (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) plated Green on the next play after blasting a double to center field.
OSU went back on top for good in the bottom of the fourth when Jenn Elwell scored the go ahead run on a double steal. The Buckeyes added an insurance run in the fifth to increase its lead to 4-2.
Katie Chain pitched five innings, scattering six hits on three strikeouts, to earn her 16th victory of the year. Wendy Allen threw the final two innings of no-hit ball for her fourth save of the season.
Becky Gray (Jr., Burr Oak, Mich.) tossed her 12th complete game of the year in the loss (7-14). Gray gave up four runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking two.
Ohio State was in control the entire game in the second contest. Stacy Roth nailed a two-run shot over the left field fence to give OSU a 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
Roth and Chrissy Fowler each had RBI hits in OSU's four-run fifth, increasing the Buckeyes lead to 6-0. Roth finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
MSU scored its lone run in the seventh. Angel Merren (Fr., Wayland, Mich.) crossed the plate from second after Buckeye Amy Ellis dropped a pop fly with two outs.
Kristi DeVries (12-5) threw the complete game for Ohio State, limiting MSU to just three hits without allowing an earned run. Keri DeJong (Jr., Portage, Mich.) went six innings for MSU in the loss (4-7).
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow (April 21) to face Penn State for a single game at 6 p.m. in State College, Pa.
