Spartans Notch 6-5 Comeback Win Over Indiana Tech

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (23-22, 6-12) defeated Indiana Tech by a score of 6-5 on Saturday (April 29) at Kobs Field. Trailing, 5-1 heading into to bottom of the fifth, State scored two runs and then took the lead in the seventh, scoring three runs. The Warriors committed five errors in the loss.
Indiana Tech took a one- run lead in the third off a RBI-double by Ismael Cruz to rightfield. The Spartans struck back in the third, as the first three hitters reached base safely. Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) and tie the game at one.
The Warriors sent nine batters to the plate in the fourth and scored four runs off five hits to make the score 5-1. MSU cut the lead to 5-3 when Koerber and Jared Koutnik (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) reached and then scored when McCuiston tripled to rightfield.
MSU grabbed the lead in the seventh, scoring three runs to go ahead, 6-5. Koutnik reached on an error and later scored when McCuiston doubled. Brett Wattles (So., Rochester) singled, followed by a sacrifice fly by Bob Malek (So., Canton) that scored McCuiston. Brady Burrill (So., Newhall, Calif.) gave the Spartans the lead when he singled to leftfield and scored Wattles. McCuiston finished the day 2-for-3 with a double and triple and four RBI.
Spartan starter Bryan Gale (Fr., Decatur) pitched eight complete innings and punched out six to improve to 8-0 on the year. He allowed 10 hits and five earned runs. Domanick Squires (Jr., Rochester Hills) picked up his sixth save of the season, pitching the ninth inning. Zenon Figueroa took the loss for Indiana Tech.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Kobs Field, game time is 1 p.m.
