Baseball Takes Fourth Straight, 4-2

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (24-22, 6-12) defeated Indiana Tech for the second straight day by a score of 4-2, Sunday at Kobs Field. The win was the Spartans' fourth straight and second straight over Indiana Tech. Michigan State starter Scott Brandell (Sr., DeWitt) struck out a career-high eight batters in picking up the victory.
MSU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Bob Malek (So., Canton), who reached on a double, scored off a wild pitch. The Spartans scored in the fifth when Troy Bergman (Jr., Grosse Pointe) singled in Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) followed by a Jared Koutnik (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) fielder's choice that scored Kevin Crews (Jr., Hinckley, Ohio) to make the score 3-0.
Indiana Tech got on the board in the top of the sixth frame with one run when an RBI-single by Jeremiah Deakins scored Nick Roberts.
The Spartans put up another run in the eighth when Brady Burrill (So., Newhall, Calif.) singled in Malek to make the score 4-1. The Warriors added one run the top of the ninth to make the final score 4-2.
Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) recorded one hit, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
MSU starting pitcher Scott Brandell threw eight and two-thirds innings and struck out a career-high eight batters. He allowed eight hits and surrendered two earned runs. Domanick Squires (Jr., Rochester Hills) recorded the last out of the game to pick up his second save of the weekend to give him eight on the year. Todd Fleetwood took the loss for Indiana Tech.
The Spartans return to action this Friday, May 4 at Kobs Field when they take on Michigan, game time is 3 p.m.
