Purdue Rallies To Defeat Spartan Softball, 5-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Purdue used a four-run sixth inning to top the Michigan State softball team, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at Old College Field on the campus of MSU. The Spartans fall to 14-26 (1-4 Big Ten) on the season, while the Boilermakers improve to 26-14-1 (3-4).
MSU jumped out to an early one run lead in the first inning. Shealee Dunavan (Sr., Yorba Linda, Calif.) got on base with a single, advanced to third on two fielder's choice outs and crossed the plate on a wild pitch to put the Spartans up 1-0.
Michigan State held onto the 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth, as Purdue designated player Sara Hall crushed a home run over the left field fence to tie the game at one.
The Boilermakers scored four runs in the sixth, putting the game out of reach for MSU. Heidi Foster highlighted the inning with a two-run homer to left field.
Becky Gray (Jr., Burr Oak, Mich.) took the loss for MSU. Gray (6-11) threw 5.1 innings, allowing four runs and six hits on four strikeouts. Leighann Burke went the distance for the Boilers, scattering four hits on only one run to improve her record to 10-7.
The Spartans stranded seven runners on base in the game, while Purdue only left one runner aboard.
Brittney Green (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.) went 2-for-2 for the Spartans, extending her hitting streak to seven games.
Michigan State will face Purdue tomorrow (April 8) at 1:00 p.m. in a single game at Old College Field.
