No. 18 Spartan Wrestling Dominates Clarion, 34-7

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 18 Michigan State wrestling team defeated Clarion, 34-7, Saturday night (Jan. 5) at Jenison Field House. MSU improves its record to 2-1 on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-6.
"As a team, we're really making some strides," said MSU Head Coach Tom Minkel. "I'm really happy with where we're at right now. The main thing is that we've turned up the pressure on our opponents, and I think it showed tonight."
The match began at 157 pounds, with sixth-ranked Gray Maynard (Jr., Las Vegas) topping Jeremy Reitz, 7-5. With the win, Maynard put his record at 9-5 on the season.
Anton Hall (Jr., Ada) scored a 15-2 major decision over Jamie Durkin at 165 pounds to put MSU up 7-0 after two matches.
At 174 pounds, Nathaniel Mesyn (So., Clinton Twp.) made quick work of Clarion's Ryan Pataky, pinning him in 31 seconds to extend the Spartan lead to 13-0. It was Mesyn's second pin of the season and 11th victory overall.
Rashad Evans (Jr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.) continued MSU's winning ways with a 13-4 major decision at 184 pounds.
John Wechter (Jr., Saginaw) preserved the shutout going into intermission with a 5-2 victory over No. 17 Eric Mausser in the 197-pound match, putting the score at 20-0.
No. 10 John Testa scored Clarion's first win in the first match after intermission at 285 pounds to prevent the shutout. Testa defeated MSU's Michael Keenan (So., Columbus, Ohio), 16-7, in a major decision.
At 125 pounds, All-American and 17th-ranked Chris Williams (Sr., Perry) scored a technical fall with a 15-0 win over Peter Derstine.
In the top matchup of the night and battle of top-10 wrestlers, No. 7 Rad Martinez of Clarion defeated No. 9 Ryan L'Amoreaux (So., Clarkston), 7-5, in the 133-pound match.
Charles Sageman (Jr., Saginaw) recorded MSU's second pin of the night at the 1:55 mark over Stephen Stremple at 141 pounds, extending MSU's lead to 31-7.
In the last match of the night at 149 pounds, No. 8 Karl Nadolsky (Jr., Holland) won his 14th match of the season with a 9-4 win over No. 19 Dominic Surra.
MSU returns to action in the National Duals, Jan. 19-20, in Columbus, Ohio.
