CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Michigan State field hockey team had two of its members named as 2002 STX/NFHCA Division I All-Americans, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced today (Nov. 25). Junior Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands) earned second team accolades, while sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) was named to the third team.
Rosmalen's excellent ball-handling skills allowed her to take full advantage of the field from her forward/midfield position this season. A unanimous decision for the All-Big Ten first team and a member of the All-West Region first team, Rosmalen scored four goals and added five assists this season. Rosmalen, who dominated the midfield for the MSU squad, tallied goals against St. Joseph's, Central Michigan and a pair of markers against Massachusetts.
Beerman leads the team in goals and points, scoring 21 goals and eight assists for 50 points. An All-Big Ten and All-West Region first-team member, the sophomore midfielder is among the nation's elite, ranked seventh in both scoring categories. She has tallied nine game-winning scores and had multi-goal games in five outings this season. She was named co-MVP of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament after scoring five of the nine Spartan goals.
The Spartans' season ended on Friday, Nov. 22, at the NCAA Final Four in Louisville, Ky. Making the program's first appearance in the national semifinals, MSU finished with the best season on record, accumulating 23 wins and just three losses.
