In the great state of Michigan, they were shredding John L. Smith yesterday.
Newspaper columnists scoffed. Talk radio hosts snickered. Message board activists sneered.
Who was this guy, they wanted to know, and why was he being hired as the new football coach at Michigan State University?
All I can tell the good people of the Upper Midwest is this: We were underwhelmed once, too.
