Softball Wraps Up Action At Louisville Slugger Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Michigan State softball team (0-4) fell to two Top-10 teams in second day action of the Louisville Slugger Classic Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16) at Farrington Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University. In game one, No. 6 Iowa defeated the Spartans, 13-0, while No. 8 Arizona State beat MSU 7-2 in game two.
In the first game of the afternoon, No. 6 Iowa (1-3) broke the game open with a five-run first inning, including a grand slam, en route to a 13-0 victory. The Hawkeyes added two runs in the third and fourth and four in the fifth. MSU pitchers surrendered four home runs and seven hits in the contest. Keri DeJong (Sr., Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) started the game and took the loss for MSU.
Angel Merren (So., Wayland, Mich./Union) had two hits against Iowa pitcher Sarah Thomson, who threw four innings for her first win of the season.
No. 8 Arizona State used three-run innings in the second and fifth to defeat the Spartans in game two. MSU prevented the shutout in the top of the seventh as Janette Hurtado (Fr., Rowland Heights, Calif./Diamond Bar) hit a two-run double to right-center field to knock in Lauren Pederson (Fr., Portage, Mich./Northern) and Sandy Lewis (Jr., Empire, Mich./Glen Lake).
Becky Gray (Jr., Burr Oak, Mich./Burr Oak) gave up seven runs, four earned, and 10 hits in the complete game loss. Gray falls to 0-2 on the season.
Natalie Furrow (So., San Diego, Calif./Mills E. Godwin) registered three of MSU's four hits in game two, going 3-for-4 with a double.
Michigan State returns to action Saturday, Feb. 23. The Spartans will participate in a three-team tournament hosted by Elon University, with MSU's first game beginning at 11 a.m. against the Elon Phoenix.
