LAS VEGAS - Michigan State and Creighton combined for 37 runs, 39 hits and 12 errors but it was Creighton who came out on top, 22-15, Sunday (Feb. 24) afternoon. Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) went six-for-six, including two doubles and one run scored.
The Blue Jays, who led most of the game, finally put the game out of reach in the eighth inning, putting up five runs and adding four more runs in the ninth. The Spartans led just once, 14-13, in the fifth off three RBI singles by Brady Burrill (Jr., Newhall, Calif.), Malek and Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio). Geswein went three-for-four on the day with four RBI.
Creighton took an early lead, batting around in the top of the first, scoring seven runs off four hits and two Spartan errors. The inning also spelled the end day for MSU starter Jon Huizinga (Sr., Wayland).
Errors plagued both teams throughout the game, as each team capitalized off its opponent's misfortunes. Michigan State put up three runs in the third off three Creighton errors while the Blue Jays scored multiple runs in the first, fourth and eighth as the Spartans committed two errors in each of those innings.
The Spartans' Adam White (So., Jenison), who pitched three innings and struck out two, suffered the loss.
The Green and White went 2-1 on the weekend, winning the UNLV Rebel Invitational. The Spartans put up 42 runs on 50 hits, including 10 home runs, in three tournament games.
Next weekend, MSU travels to Charlotte, N.C., to take on UNC-Charlotte.
