Spartan Baseball Falls At Furman, 7-6

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Michigan State baseball team fell to Furman, 7-6, Tuesday (Mar. 5) as the Paladins rallied from a 6-3 deficit. The Spartans are now 5-2 on the season while Furman improves to 5-8.
Spartan first baseman Scott Koerber (So., Harper Woods), who was named Big Ten Player of the Week March 5, continued his hot start to the 2002 season, picking up three hits in five at bats. Koerber drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the second that scored Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio).
After Furman took a 3-1 lead in the third off three hits, Michigan State reclaimed a 6-3 lead with five runs of its own in the fourth. Bob Malek (Jr., Canton), who extended his hitting streak to five games, drove in one run in the fourth with a single to center field. Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham) followed with a grand slam by down the left-field line.
Furman fought back with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to regain the lead at 7-6. The Spartans loaded the bases in the ninth but were unable to pull even.
Geswein, MSU's starting pitcher, threw seven complete innings and struck out four. Pat Gill (Jr., Grandville), who took over in the eighth and pitched two-thirds of an inning, took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits.
Michigan State continues its eight-game spring trip against Wofford Wednesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
