Women's Gymnastics Finish Second at 2002 Michigan Classic

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State women's gymnastics team faced in-state rivals No. 23 Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Western Michigan and conference opponent No. 9 Michigan in the 2002 State of Michigan Classic in Ypsilanti. The Spartans took second with a final team score of 193.650 behind the Wolverines, who scored 196.300.
The competition marked senior co-captain Jane McIntosh's (Concord, Mich./Concord) first meet of the season after a preseason shoulder injury. McIntosh returned with a first-place performance on the balance beam, scoring a 9.875.
Junior Christy Linder (Fremont, Ohio/Fremont Ross) had a strong showing for the Spartans as well, tying for fourth place on the beam (9.825), tying for third on the floor (9.900), tying for seventh on the uneven bars (9.775), and scoring 9.800 on the vault for a third-place tie. Linder's 39.300 all-around score missed a first-place finish by only .325. Calli Ryals of Michigan won the all-around title at 39.625.
Other top-10 Spartan performances included: Lauren Simpson (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) on the vault for 10th place (9.725), McIntosh and Kristin Merritt (Racine, Wisc./Washington Park), tying for seventh in the floor exercise (9.800), and Lindsay Trainham (Briarcliff, Mich./Good Counsel Academy), tying for seventh on the balance beam (9.800).
The Spartans return to action at the Circle of Stars Invite in Indianapolis on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7:00 p.m.
