CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Michigan State baseball team (3-1) continued its impressive offensive output Friday (Mar. 1) with a 12-3 win over Charlotte (4-5). Sophomore Scott Koerber (Harper Woods) helped pace the attack, going 3-for-5 with six RBI, including two, two-run homers. MSU starting pitcher Bryan Gale (So., Decatur) went six full innings, surrendering six hits and three runs, while striking out four. Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) earned the save and went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Spartans broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs and boosting their lead to 8-1. Geswein knocked a two-RBI single to right, followed two batters later by Koerber who hit a two-run homer to score Geswein.
After State grabbed a two-run lead in the second, Charlotte got on the board in the third with one run, MSU responded in the fourth with two runs to increase their lead to 4-1. Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham), who went 2-for-5, and Koerber each crossed home for the Spartans.
After Charlotte scored one run in the fifth and sixth innings, Koerber hit his second two-run homer of the game to make the Spartans' lead 10-3. The Green and White added two more in the ninth to make the final score 12-3.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow at noon.
