EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's gymnastics team learned today that it has qualified for the 2002 NCAA Regionals. The 21st-ranked Spartans will be one of six teams to compete in the Southeast Region at the campus of West Virginia University at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
Joining the Spartans in Morgantown, W.V., will be No. 2 Alabama, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 19 West Virginia, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 22 North Carolina. The top two teams from each of the six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships April 18-20 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
MSU will be making its fifth appearance at the NCAA Regionals in the last seven years. Michigan State's last appearance in the NCAA Regionals occurred in 2000 when the Spartans placed sixth. Since women's gymnastics became a sanctioned NCAA championships event in 1982, MSU's highest finish at the NCAA Regionals has been third place, which has happened five times, but not since 1989.
Michigan State owns a 15-6 record this season, and placed fifth at the Big Ten championships Saturday, April 23, in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans have recorded five of the top 17 team scores in school history this season, including a season-best 195.725 Feb. 16 against Rutgers, which was the fourth best score in MSU history.
Tickets for the event can be purchased in advance for $8, or on the day of the meet for $10 for adults and $4 for children, by calling 1-800-WVU-GAME.
