EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team fell to Minnesota Sunday (Mar. 31) afternoon by a score of 10-6, as the Gophers and Spartans split the four-game series. Minnesota (10-14, 2-2) used 21 hits en route to the win. MSU is now 17-5 and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
Six hits and four runs by Minnesota in the first inning put an early end to MSU starter Kyle Geswein's (Dayton, Ohio) day, who lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Jason Kennedy highlighted the inning for the Gophers with a three-run homer.
The Spartans got on the board with three-unearned runs in the fourth to cut the Minnesota lead to 5-3. After Brady Burrill (Jr., Newhall, Calif.) and Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham) reached on errors, Scott Koerber (So., Harper Woods) doubled in Burrill. Koerber and McCuiston later scored.
Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) belted a two-out solo shot over the right field wall to cut Minnesota's lead to a single-run, 5-4, in the fifth. However, the Gophers would push their lead to 8-4 in the sixth off four hits.
Refusing to quit, RBI-singles by Brett Wattles (Jr., Rochester) and Jared Koutnik (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) put the State back within two runs, 8-6. The Gophers' Jason Kennedy put the game out of reach in the ninth with a two-run home run.
Jay Gagner earned the win for Minnesota while Geswein took the loss to fall to 1-1.
MSU returns to action Wednesday (April 3) when they host IPFW at 3 p.m.
