Softball Splits Doubleheader With Penn State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State softball team split a doubleheader with Penn State Sunday afternoon (March 31) at Old College Field on the MSU campus. The Spartans fell in game one, 2-1, but came back to take game two, 11-4. MSU is now 12-21 (1-3 Big Ten) for the season.
The Spartans pounded out a season-high 14 hits in the 11-4 game two victory. Natalie Furrow (So., San Diego, Calif./Mills E. Godwin) went 3-for-5 with two RBI while Robyn Golden (Jr., Belleville/Belleville), Brittney Green (So., Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley) and Janette Hurtado (Fr., Rowland Heights, Calif./Diamond Bar) each collected two hits in the offensive barrage.
MSU jumped out early, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Hurtado capped a four-run second with a double to left field that brought home three runs.
Tiffany Wallace (Jr., Wildomar, Calif./Pacifica) and Angel Merren (So., Wayland/Union) each had RBI base hits in the top of the fourth to extend MSU's lead to 9-0.
The Nittany Lions (14-15, 2-2) plated one run in the bottom of the fourth and three in the fifth to prevent a run-rule in five innings, but the Spartans added two more runs late to score a season-high 11 runs for the game.
Jessica Beech (So., Okemos/Okemos) notched her fourth victory of the season (4-5) by tossing 6.2 innings of relief. Beech allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out four.
Penn State used two solo home runs in the first game of the afternoon for a 2-1 win. With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, PSU's Jackie Dabrowski blasted a homer over the left-field fence for the game-winning run.
The Spartans scored their lone run on a Janette Hurtado RBI single in the second. Hurtado finished the afternoon 3-for-7 with four RBI for the Spartans.
Michigan State returns to action Tuesday, April 2 to face Eastern Michigan at Old College Field beginning at 4 p.m.
