Spartan Gymnasts Defeat George Washington

WASHINGTON, DC - The Michigan State women's gymnastics team posted its fourth straight solid score, defeating George Washington, 195.350 to 194.650 Saturday night in Washington, D.C. After three straight weeks at home surpassing 195 points, the Spartans posted their best road score of the season to improve to 14-4 while giving head coach Kathie Klages her 200th career victory. The 12th-year head coach now has a career record of 200-93-2.
Junior Julie Devaty (North Olmsted, Ohio) won the balance beam for the Spartans, posting a score of 9.900. Junior Christy Linder (Fremont, Ohio) earned the Spartans' other first-place score, recording a 9.850 to share the top spot on the vault.
Other top performances for MSU came from junior Diana Crea (Beaver Falls, Pa.), who placed second on the uneven bars with a score of 9.825, and from senior Jane McIntosh (Concord, Mich.), who placed second on the balance beam by scoring 9.850.
Freshman Kristin Merritt (Racine, Wis.) had MSU's top all-around performance, finishing third with a score of 38.850, including a top finish of fifth-place on the bars (9.725).
Michigan State had just two other top three performances, as Devaty and Linder tied for third on the floor with scored of. 9.850, but had enough solid performances to overcome the top George Washington performances.
Michigan State will next venture to Corvallis, Ore., as the Spartans will compete in the Shanico Invitational against host Oregon State, Michigan and Seattle Pacific next Saturday, March 16.
