The Michigan State baseball team used three home runs to down Indiana, 10-6, Sunday (April 14) at Kobs Field. The win gave MSU a four-game series split with the Hoosiers. MSU improved to 22-8 and 6-5 in the conference, while IU fell to 26-8, 8-4 in the Big Ten.
Indiana got out to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning off four hits and added another in the second to jump ahead, 4-0. Michigan State struck back in the bottom of the second as Kevin Crews (Sr., Hinckely, Ohio) knocked a two-run single through the left side, scoring James Moreno (So., Holt) and Charlie Braun (Jr., Grosse Pointe). Brett Wattles (Jr., Rochester) added a run-scoring sacrifice fly later in the inning.
With Indiana leading 5-4 in the fifth, Brady Burrill (Jr., Newhall, Calif.) hit a three-run homer to give State its first lead of the day, 6-5. After IU tied the game at six in the sixth, Wattles broke the tie with a solo shot that just cleared the fence in right center to put the Green and White back in front, 7-6.
With two outs in the seventh, Braun picked an opportune time to hit his first career home run. His three-run shot over the right field fence secured a 10-6 Spartan victory.
MSU starter Pat Gill (Jr., Grandville) threw six and one-third innings, giving up eight hits, while striking out five, to get his fifth win of the season. IU's Pat Boucher, who took over in the fifth, took the loss. Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) earned his second save of the season for MSU.
MSU returns to action Tuesday (April 16) when they host Wayne State at 3 p.m.
