EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team broke the single-season home run record, Tuesday (April 16), hitting five home runs in a 22-6 win over Wayne State. The five home runs on the day give MSU a total of 62 on the year. The 1984 and 1994 clubs previously shared the record with 59 home runs. For the Spartans, it was the third time this season they put up 20 or more runs in a game as they improved to 23-8.
In the second inning Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) hit the first of his two home runs on the day, belting his first grand slam of the season to right field. MSU continued its offensive attack in the third inning as Kyle Geswein (Sr., Dayton, Ohio), Jim Duffy (Fr., Carleton) and Malek all went deep to help MSU put up a six-spot in the inning.
Malek finished the day 3-for-3 and tied a season-high with six RBI.
State would go on to score in every inning thereafter, making the final score, 22-6.
Tim Day (Fr., West Chester, Ohio) started on the hill for the Spartans and earned the win, pitching three innings and striking out three. State used five more pitchers along the way, combining for eight more strikeouts. Paul Gergics suffered the loss for the Warriors.
Michigan State returns to action Friday (April 19), when they travel to Ann Arbor to begin a four-game series with the Wolverines at 3 p.m. Saturday's twinbill with the Wolverines will take place at Kobs Field at 1 p.m.
