Spartan Softball Shuts Out Loyola, 9-0

CHICAGO - Becky Gray (Sr., Burr Oak/Burr Oak) threw four innings and only allowed one hit to earn her team-leading 11th win of the season as the Michigan State softball team (22-26) defeated Loyola (13-18), 9-0 in six innings, Thursday afternoon (April 18) at Loyola Softball Park. Gray, who struck out three batters, now has 374 strikeouts for her career, moved closer to the all-time strikeout record at Michigan State, which is 408.
Michigan State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Robyn Golden (Jr., Belleville/Belleville) hit an RBI double to center field in the top of the second that brought home Brittney Green (So., Simi Valley/Simi Valley).
MSU extended its lead to two runs in the third. Pinch-hitter Sheridan Fowler (Fr., Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) nailed a single up the middle, plating Margaret Schick (Jr., Grass Lake/Chelsea) to make it 2-0.
The Spartans broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits. Natalie Furrow (So., San Diego, Calif./Mills E. Goodwin), Tiffany Wallace (Jr., Pacifica, Calif./Wildomar) and Green all had RBI singles in the inning.
MSU added three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Golden blasted a two-run shot over the centerfield fence while Green had another RBI single. Golden finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and Green went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
Gray was relieved in the sixth by Jessica Beech (So., Okemos/Okemos). Beech pitched the final two innings and only gave up one hit.
Michigan State returns to action Friday, April 19 to face Iowa for a single game in Iowa City, beginning at 6 p.m. CST.
