DETROIT - Nine games and counting.
The Michigan State softball team extended its winning streak to nine games after sweeping Detroit in a doubleheader, 5-2 and 10-0, Tuesday afternoon (April 9) at Titan Field. Lacy Hauxhurst (Jr., Westminster, Calif./Westminster) added an insurance run later in the inning with an RBI double that brought home Tiffany Wallace (Jr., Wildomar, Calif./Pacifica).
MSU led 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, but the Titans rallied to score two runs to tie the game.
The Spartans scored runs in the first and third innings to build a 2-0 lead. Margaret Schick (Jr., Grass Lake/Chelsea) scored on a wild pitch in the first and Hauxhurst hit a sacrifice fly to plate Wallace in the third.
Jessica Beech (So., Okemos/Okemos), who came in relief in the sixth inning, pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn her eighth win of the year (8-5).
MSU's offense, averaging 8.8 runs the last six games, came alive in the second game for a 10-0 win in six innings. Leading 4-0 after five innings, the Spartans erupted for six runs in the sixth. Golden hit another two-run homer, her second of the doubleheader and ninth of the year, while Brittney Green (So., Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley) blasted a solo home run and Sandy Lewis (Jr., Empire/Glen Lake) hit a three-run double in the inning.
