EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 18 Michigan State wrestling team began its six-match homestand with a 22-13 victory over No. 21 Wisconsin Friday night (Jan. 31) at Jenison Field House. MSU improves to 4-5 (2-1 Big Ten) for the season, while the Badgers fall to 9-2 (1-2 BT).
"This team has made huge progress from a month ago," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "We continue to get better every week. This team is very receptive to new ideas and new techniques, and the guys are constantly evolving."
Seventh-ranked Nick Simmons (R-Fr., Williamston) continued his winning ways, beginning the dual with a 7-4 victory over No. 13 Tony Black at 125 pounds. Simmons led 5-0 on three near-fall points after the first period, and added an escape point and riding time in the win. Simmons extended his season-high winning streak to five matches.
The Spartans fell behind 4-3 on No. 6 Kevin Black's 10-2 major decision over Shane Martin (So., DeWitt) in the 133-pound bout.
MSU jumped back into the lead after the 141-pound match as Ryan L'Amoreaux (Jr., Clarkston) came back to defeat Tyler Laudon, 6-4. L'Amoreaux scored an escape point and a takedown in the third period, keying the victory after the score was tied at 3-3 after the second.
Karl Nadolsky (Sr., Holland) took one step closer in becoming just the 13th Spartan in history to collect 100 victories with his 99th career win in a 4-1 decision over Ed Gutnik at 149 pounds. The match was scoreless after the first two periods, but Nadolsky recorded a takedown, an escape point and riding time in the third.
MSU stretched its lead to 15-4 as No. 6 Gray Maynard (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) wasted no time in pinning Chris Borchardt at 157 pounds. Maynard, who is seventh all-time at MSU in falls, recorded his 26th career pin in just 1:04.
"Gray is absolutely incredible in his combination of taking people down and pinning them quickly," said Minkel. "And he demonstrated that perfectly tonight."
In his first career dual at 165 pounds, Charles Sageman (Sr., Saginaw) battled against Ryan Turner, but fell short, 4-2.
The Spartans went back up 11 points as Rashad Evans (Sr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.) had five takedowns in his 12-7 decision over Ryan Flaherty at 174 pounds.
MSU and Wisconsin continued to trade wins as ninth-ranked Ralph DeNisco defeated Jeff Clemens (R-Fr., Bellbrook, Ohio), 9-5, in the 184-pound bout.
At 197 pounds, Nik Fekete (Sr., Cranford, N.J.) won his seventh match in a row in style, recording a four-point technical fall victory over Lee Kraemer, 22-7. Fekete did not scored any near-fall points, however, so the technical fall was worth four team points rather than five.
"This is the best I've seen Nik wrestle," Minkel said, "and he can get even better. He knows where he wants to go, and he's on his way there."
In the final match at heavyweight, Justin Staebler defeated No. 19 John Wechter (Sr., Saginaw), 3-1.
MSU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 2 to face No. 5 Oklahoma in Jenison Field House at 12:30 p.m.
