EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State hockey put on an offensive showing in skating to an 8-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win over Ferris State at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night (Oct. 31). With the victory, MSU improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the CCHA, while Ferris State dropped to 2-5 overall, 1-4 in the conference.
"We are playing better," said second-year head coach Rick Comley. "We are generating better chances. We wanted better balance on this team, and I believe that we are inching closer to that goal."
Five different Spartans scored in the win, led by freshman forward Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio) who registered his first career hat trick. Meanwhile, freshman netminder Dominic Vicari (Clinton Township, Mich.) stopped 21 shots en route to his first career shutout.
"I just worried about taking each shot individually, and doing what I have been taught to do," said Vicari on his first shutout. "Each win and each game that you play really helps build your confidence. I felt pretty good in warm-ups tonight and it really carried over into the game."

Just 33 seconds into the game, Goebel scored his first of the night on a breakaway. Less than three minutes later, Goebel tallied his second of the night as he took a centering pass from Ash Goldie (London, Ont.) and put the puck past FSU netminder Mike Brown.
Junior Steve Swistak (West Bloomfield, Mich.) registered his first career goal, deflecting a Chris Snavely (Lancaster, Pa.) shot from the point to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. MSU's first three goals were scored in a span of 3:50.
At 6:08 of the opening stanza, sophomore David Booth (Washington, Mich.) scored on a Goldie rebound for his second goal of the season. Goldie took a feed from senior defenseman Joe Markusen (Park River, N.D.) as Brown deflected the initial shot. When the Bulldog defenders couldn't clear the puck, Booth capitalized by nailing a shot past Brown.
After a scoreless second period, Goebel picked up his hat trick at the 9:31 mark of the third period. He netted the puck after retrieving his own rebound twice, to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead.
"It felt really good (to score my first hat trick)," said Goebel. "It was a great win for the team. Everyone contributed in tonight's game."
Less than a minute later, junior forward Brock Radunske (New Hamburg, Ont.) one-timed a shot for MSU's sixth goal of the evening. Swistak tallied his second of the night with a power-play marker at the 15:06 mark, before Snavely registered his first career goal with a low-shot from the point at the 16:16 mark.
"It was a great feeling to score my first goal," said Swistak. "But, it was a team effort tonight. This was a big win at home over Ferris State."
The series moves to Big Rapids tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 1) as the teams meet at Ewigleben Arena at 7:05 p.m.
