BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan State hockey team won its fourth straight contest on Saturday, Nov. 1, posting a 4-2 win at Ferris State in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action. With the win, MSU has posted back-to-back sweeps the last two weekends.
"It was a tough game to play," said MSU head coach Rick Comley. "It was hard fought. We got outplayed in the hockey game, but we found a way to win. We looked like a young hockey team tonight, but we continue to find ways to win."
For the second straight night, MSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Tommy Goebel (Parma, Ohio) at the 4:12 mark. The goal was Goebel's sixth of the season and his fourth goal over the past two nights.
"I just tried a quick shot on goal," said Goebel. "I'm just getting some lucky bounces and the puck is going in."
However, Ferris State (2-6 overall, 1-5 CCHA) would take its first lead of the weekend, 2-1, on goals by Nick Scheible and Matt York. Scheible's goal at the 6:46 mark was scored on a rebound, while York threaded a shot through traffic in front of the net for his first goal of the season at 10:09.
MSU netminder Matt Migliaccio (Wyandotte, Mich.) made several key saves to keep the game 2-1 during the second stanza. Migliaccio stopped Derek Nesbitt on a breakaway and made another save on a shot by Derrick McIver while the Spartans were shorthanded. He stopped Nesbitt once again from point-blank range with just over six minutes to play. All told, Migliaccio stopped 14 shots in the second period and finished with 33 saves in the game en route to his third win of the season.
"I thought that Matt struggled early, but he really held us in there," commented Comley. "He made several really key saves to help this team."

The Spartans reclaimed a 3-2 lead in a span of 1:08 on goals by Goebel and Adam Nightingale (Cheboygan, Mich.). Goebel, who was streaking down the side, took a feed from Jim Slater and buried it over Mike Brown at the 1:41 mark of the third period. Nightingale registered his first career MSU goal, scoring on a rebound from a Corey Potter (Mason, Mich.) shot from the point. Junior forward Steve Swistak (West Bloomfield, Mich.) dug the puck out of the corner and passed it over to Potter for the initial shot.
"Swiss (Steve Swistak) really made the play out of the corner to get the puck to Potter, and I just happened to be in the right place to get the rebound," said Adam Nightingale. "Coach had talked to me about being patience, so it was definitely nice to get one."
Junior forward Mike Lalonde (Chetwynd, B.C.) iced the game with an empty-net tally with 28 seconds left. Laldone's goal was his fifth of the season.
Michigan State (5-3 overall, 4-2 CCHA) returns to action next weekend (Nov. 7-8) as the Spartans entertain Notre Dame in a two-game set at Munn Ice Arena. Face-off both nights is set for 7:05 p.m.
