ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team's fall season came to a close Monday morning at the Big Ten Singles Indoor Championships. Junior Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was unable to bring a conference title back to East Lansing, but still managed to finish the tournament with a 4-1 record.
The second-seed for the main draw, Formanczyk went up against seventh-seeded Chris Wettengel of Minnesota in a semifinal showdown at the University of Michigan. Formanczyk went into the match with a 2-0 all-time record against Wettengel, who represents the Golden Gophers at No. 77 in the preseason national rankings. One of those victories occurred in last year's Big Ten Singles tournament in the round of 16.
But Formanczyk's string of wins came to a halt. Wettengel took an early lead with a 6-3 first-set advantage by way of one break of serve. The Minnesota senior then cruised to an early second set lead after holding two break-point conversions in his pocket. Formanczyk battled back to even things up only to fall in the tiebreaker. Wettengel took the match, 6-3, 7-6(3).
Formanczyk finished with a 9-4 overall record for the fall, tied with junior Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) for singles victories.
The Spartans have a two-month rest before opening up their dual-match season at home. Toledo and Wright State head to East Lansing in a doubleheader for MSU Jan. 17.
