EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior co-captain Gray Maynard (Las Vegas, Nev.) was named co-Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Feb. 12 after defeating two top-10 wrestlers last weekend in Michigan State's upset wins over No. 2 Iowa and No. 9 Michigan.
Maynard, ranked fifth in the nation at 157 pounds, beat No. 8 Joe Johnston of Iowa, 15-11, on Friday, Feb. 7, as MSU topped the Hawkeyes for the first time in 32 years. He topped that performance by defeating former high school teammate and ranked foe Ryan Bertin of Michigan in a 5-4 tiebreaker win on Sunday, Feb. 9. The victory put MSU up four team points with only one match left in the dual, propelling the Spartans to their first win over Michigan since 1998.
Maynard (13-4), who currently has 97 career wins, is looking to become just the 14th Spartan in history to record 100 victories. The 157-pounder has won four consecutive matches, and his only losses this season have come to the top-two ranked wrestlers in his weight class.
Maynard and the rest of the Michigan State wrestling team - which jumped to No. 7 in the polls after defeating three straight top-10 teams - will conclude the home season this weekend at Jenison Field House. The Spartans will meet North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. and will take on No. 12 Penn State on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.
