Softball Splits A Pair In Santa Barbara Finale

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Michigan State softball team split its final two games at the Softball By The Beach Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Spartans dropped a 2-0 decision to Cal State Northridge, before concluding with a 6-0 victory over the University of San Diego in the finale.
In the day's opener against CSUN, the Matadors took the 2-0 lead in the second over the Spartans. Margaret Schick (Grass Lake, Mich.) tallied the only hit for the Spartans, while Stephanie Christner (Sigourney, Iowa) was on the mound for the entire game, striking out five.
Michigan State's second game of the day, a 6-0 blanking of San Diego, belonged to Jessica Beech (Okemos, Mich.). Beech hit her first collegiate home run in the second inning, driving in Robyn Golden (Belleville, Mich.). Beech also pitched the shutout for the Spartans - just one hit shy of a no-hitter. She struck out nine, while walking just one.
Michigan State also received run support from Elizabeth Peterson (Riverside, Calif.), who tripled in the third, allowing Sandy Lewis (Empire, Mich.) to cross home plate. Natalie Furrow (San Diego, Calif.) hit a single in the sixth, driving in Brittney Green (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Angel Merren (Wayland, Mich.).
The Spartans (4-3) continue their season next weekend (Feb. 28-March 2) at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. MSU will face Virginia and the College of Charleston on Feb. 28.
