EAST LANSING, Mich. - Dylan Putman has been retained by the Michigan State baseball staff as a full-time assistant coach, head coach Ted Mahan announced today. Putman served as an assistant coach in an interim capacity during the 2003 season, but has now been named a permanent part of the staff.
Putnam, who will continue to work primarily with the pitching staff, earned three letters as a player at Michigan State from 2000-02, before coaching during the 2003 campaign.
"I think Dylan, with the year of experience under his belt, proved he can handle the pitching staff and we certainly had a very fine staff in 2003," said Mahan. "I feel Dylan can lead our staff to bigger and better things in the future. He is a very sharp young man and a Spartan. He was an outstanding student-athlete and is one of our own. The timing was right, he did a great job this past year and we expect big things from him in the future."
Last season, seven different Spartan pitchers had at least one win each during Putnam's first season on the bench as MSU posted a 21-34 record. MSU hurlers had 14 complete games and struck out 252 batters in 440 innings. Junior Bryan Gale earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after posting a 7-6 record and a 3.48 earned run average.
During his playing days at MSU, Putnam made 46 appearances and threw over 100 innings of relief while striking out 100 batters. His 22 appearances as a sophomore ranks in the top 10 for a single season at MSU. Putnam battled injuries his senior campaign, but still managed to strike out 17 batters in just 11.0 innings of work.
Putnam was drafted in the 24th round of the 2001 Major League Amateur Baseball Draft by the Oakland Athletics and pitched in the Frontier League in the summer of 2002. He posted a 2-0 record with a 1.04 ERA in 17.1 innings for the Washington Wildthings before returning to MSU last fall.
The Ann Arbor, Mich., native transferred to Michigan State after playing one year at Tulane University. Before college, he was a two-time team MVP at Orchard Lake St. Mary's High School and was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 1997 Major League Baseball Draft.
Putnam, 23, graduated with a degree in kinesiology from Michigan State University in 2002 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in athletic administration from MSU.
