IRVINE, Calif - The Michigan State men's soccer team bounced back from their loss on Friday to beat the UC Irvine Anteaters, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The win improved MSU's record to 3-2 on the season, while the Anteaters fell to 2-3.
John Minagawa-Webster (Jr., Monroe) capitalized on a pass from sophomore forward Ryan McMahen (Munster, Ind.) at the 32:49 mark to put the Spartans up 1-0. The goal was Minagawa-Webster's first on the season.
In the 72nd minute Minagawa-Webster put the ball past the UC Irvine goalkeeper for his second goal of the game.
The Anteaters had several scoring chances late in the game, however they were shutout by the Spartans' senior goalkeeper Mike Robinson (Troy). It was his third shutout of the season.
The Spartans have a week off until they travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Big Ten opener to play No. 11 Indiana. The Hoosiers should prove to be a tough test for Michigan State next Sunday (Sept. 21) at 3 p.m. EDT.
